Can Sitting Contribute to Heart Disease?

Heart disease is the leading cause of death throughout the world. In a number of research studies, it’s been demonstrated that there is an undeniable link between heart disease and a sedentary lifestyle. In other words, the more time you spend seated, the higher the risk of heart disease.

Sitting Is the New Smoking

There’s a saying that has grown in popularity that states that sitting is the new smoking. A study conducted in the Annals of Internal Medicine discovered that staying seated for longer than eight hours per day can enhance your risk of heart disease by up to 200%. In the same study, they found that people who incorporated movement into their day and only stayed seated for 30 minutes or less had a 55% lower risk than those who stayed seated for longer stretches of time.

The Risks of Staying Seated

In another study analyzing the effects of staying seated, conducted by the Loughborough University and the University of Leicester in the UK found that those who spent prolonged periods of time seated had a significantly higher risk of disease and even death. This study discovered several frightening facts, including the following:

  • 112% increased risk of diabetes
  • 147% increased risk of cardiovascular problems, including heart attack and stroke
  • 90% increased risk of cardiovascular-related death
